About

Tuesdays Without Alma is a space to have discourse without labels, where feminism isn’t a bad word, and everyone has a seat at the table.

During the time when Tuesdays with Morrie was topping the New York Times’ best sellers charts, Alma Jeanne was quietly and gracefully fighting the same battle against ALS in a small Wyoming town. Alma was this site administrator’s Morrie – the one “who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it.” This site is a tribute to Alma, and therefore attempts to imitate the ways in which Alma interacted with people, politics, and the voices of those made to feel silenced.

Nicknamed “The Little General”, Alma was fiercely independent, a champion of civil rights, and one who suffered no fools. A staunch Democrat in a predominantly Republican state, she inspired nonjudgmental, respectful discussions on a wide variety of tricky topics that make it quite clear history has a tendency to repeat itself.

Tuesdays Without Alma is administered by Kobi Penland. Based in Los Angeles, Kobi has an MA in Holocaust Studies from University College London and has over a decade of experience in Holocaust Studies and Survivor Services.

A newsletter for fans of history, the lesser knowns, and curiosities.

  1. Your Grandmother would be so happy that she has inspired this blog, a new place to showcase your writing talents (and hopefully more of your photography). Love it!
